APPLICATION GUIDE LINES WHEN REPLACING/UPGRADING MOTORS & CONTROLS :
From time to time we get asked; ...can my cart go faster, deliver more torque for better hill climbing, can I upgrade my motor, can I upgrade my controller, & my motor/controller are obsolete so what are the replacements?
To help guide customers in getting the best replacement parts for their cart, & replacement parts that work properly the "1st time", ...we have listed the following information you should have available for review when requesting replacement parts.
Having this information will help us, help you, in selecting the right parts for your request, the 1st time, & making/buying replacement parts an easier process for your.
For example, ....Club Car in the 1990's designed the foot pedal control (...also called the rheostat or potentiometer or throttling input), to send out a signal to the controller in either 0-5k ohms resistance, or 5k-0 ohm resistance. This signal in ohms is the input signal to the controller, which tells the controller "how to" (and "how much") make the cart motor vary it's speed. E-Z-GO offers a throttling technology called "ITS" (magnitude impulse technology). Then after 2000, new technologies were developed called "regenerative" & "IQ" technology ...all affect which motor & controller we recommend when you ask for recommendations. Knowing this allows us to properly program the replacement controller before shipping; ….
...because, some controllers come programmable & some come non programmable, ...adding another twist to proper selection.
The ultimate goal from the following questions is, together with you, understand the proper throttling input from the foot pedal to the controller, & its resultant input to the motor, when controlling speed & torque, ....2 features on your cart you most likely want upgraded, or identical to what you presently have(speed & torque).
....so, if you can provide us with as many answers to these questions as possible, we will help you achieve the results you want when requesting replacements parts:
1 - How is the cart intended to be used? Golf or utility?
2 - If golf, is increased torque for better hill climbing desired?
3 - Brand & Model & Year of the cart?
4 - Model number & Serial number of existing controller?
5 - Color of existing controller? (...yes color, black tells us it's 0-5k ohms & silver it's 5k-0 ohms)
6 - If known, what is the foot pedal connection resistance, 0-5k ohms, 5k-0 ohms, or ITS.
7 - Does the motor or controller say "regenerative" or "IQ" on the name plate?
8 - What are you trying to achieving if you want to upgrade? ...more speed? ...more toque? ...both?
ALSO, ...KEEP THIS IN MIND WHEN MAKING CHANGES TO YOUR CART & WHAT YOU EXPECT IN RETURN; ...WHEN YOU UPGARDE, YOU TYPICALLY INCREASE THE AMPERAGE OF THE COMPONENTS.
AMPS ARE LIKE WATER PRESSURE, VOLTAGE IS LIKE FLOW.
WHEN YOU INCREASE THE PRESSURE (AMPERAGE), IT TRIES TO FIND ANY WEAK SOPTS & CAUSE A PROBLEM/FAILURE.
WE CAN REDUCE THIS RISK BY SIZING/SELECTING THE REPLACEMENT COMPONENTS PROPERLY. BUT THAT DOESN'T GUARANTEE A SUCCESSFUL RETROFIT. YOU CAN HAVE A SITUATION WHERE THE NEW COMPONENTS WORK, BUT YOUR'RE NOT GETTING THE EXPECTED RESULTS.
BEFORE WE BLAME THE NEW REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR NOT WORKING, ...MAKE SURE YOUR CABLE CONNECTIONS ARE "CLEAN", RELATIVELY NEW, & TIGHT. MAKE SURE EACH OF YOUR BATTERIES ARE IN GOOD WORKING ORDER & ALSO RELATIVELY NEW.
WE'VE SEEN MANY RETROFITS WHERE THE NEW CONTROLLER &/OR MOTOR ARE NOT PERFORMING AS EXPECTED, ONLY TO DETERMINE THAT POOR CABLES, & DEGREDADED BATTERIES ARE THE CAUSE;
...ALL BECAUSE THOSE "PESKY" NEW AMPS WE ADDED TO THE SYSTEM FOUND THEIR HOLE TO PUNCH THROUGH, & CAUSE
POOR PERFORMANCE OR A FAILURE. - ....FYI, ...FOOD FOR THOUGHT !!
